Why people stay in Bendigo
Short stays around Bendigo run from apartments and cottages near the centre, within walking distance of the galleries, restaurants and the station, to family homes in Strathdale, Kennington, Flora Hill and further out. Guests come for the food (Bendigo became a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2019), for weddings and family visits, for work at the hospital and the university, and for the big weekends on the calendar.
Those weekends are what make turnovers tricky. The Bendigo Easter Festival has run since 1871 and fills the city from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. The Australian Sheep and Wool Show brings crowds to the Prince of Wales Showgrounds every July: about 30,000 people came through the gates over three days in 2023, and the Bendigo Advertiser reported local motels close to full. On weekends like those, check-outs and check-ins stack up, and a host needs every turnover done in the gap between guests. Send us those dates early and we'll plan around them.
A note for hosts on the levy
Since 1 January 2025, Victoria's short stay levy applies to stays of less than 28 consecutive days in a property that isn't someone's main home. According to the State Revenue Office, it's 7.5% of the booking fee, and the booking fee includes any cleaning fee you charge guests. Booking platforms collect it on bookings made through them. It's worth knowing when you set your cleaning fee, and the SRO page has the detail.
Old houses and new estates
Greater Bendigo has every kind of house. Gold-era cottages in Golden Square, Ironbark and Eaglehawk, family homes in White Hills, Kangaroo Flat and Strathfieldsaye, and new estates in Huntly, Epsom, Maiden Gully, Spring Gully and Junortoun. Each cleans differently. Newer homes are mostly about floors and big glass. Older ones have timber floors, painted skirtings, high ceilings and bathrooms that stay damp through a Bendigo winter.
The Victorian Government's Better Health Channel says homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos and that you can't tell by looking. That matters most at the end of a lease, when old wall sheeting and vinyl get the hardest scrub. We clean surfaces gently and never sand, drill or scrape old sheeting or flaking paint.
