Apple country and weekend stays

Harcourt sits at the foot of Mount Alexander, about 9 km north-east of Castlemaine and around 20 minutes south of Bendigo. It's apple and cider country: the Harcourt Valley's own site describes hundreds of hectares of orchards, and some of the largest commercial plantings of cider apples in Australia. That brings visitors for cellar doors, cideries, and the climbs up Mount Alexander that road cyclists know well.

The busiest weekend is Applefest. It's held in Harcourt every March, when the new-season apples are in, and it draws big crowds. If you host a short stay around Harcourt, that's the weekend when check-outs and check-ins pile up, so let us know your dates well ahead.

Farm stays, cottages and bush blocks

Short stays out this way are often whole houses on bigger blocks: a cottage on an orchard, a converted shed, a house in the bush outside Ravenswood or Big Hill. They clean differently to a city apartment. There's more floor, more glass looking out over paddocks, and more dust and leaf litter carried in from outside. Wood heaters are common, and in winter that means ash on the hearth and grit on the floors. Homes in the corridor

Plenty of people live out here and work in Bendigo or Castlemaine, and a regular clean on a set day saves a weekend. Some are newer homes, others are older places with a long history on the block. The Better Health Channel says homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos and that it can't be identified by looking, so on older homes we clean surfaces gently and never sand, drill or scrape old sheeting, eaves or flaking paint.
